About our Staff

Kate

Hello, my name is Kate and I am the Manager and Early Years Lead Practitioner at First Steps. I have held this post since 2005.

After leaving school I attended college and gained my NNEB certificate. On completion I worked in a residential setting in Bath with children who had complex physical and mental health needs.

In 1979 I enrolled at King's College Hospital, London, and qualified as a nurse. For many years I worked on the paediatric wards within Plymouth.

In 1987 I had a career break to raise my twins and became a full time mum. Prior to my present job I worked as a Teaching Assistant in several schools.

At the pre-school I am also the Child Protection Officer and the SENCO Advisor.

I really enjoy my job at the pre-school and I'm lucky to work with such dedicated staff.

Annie

I started working for First Steps Pre-School in 2011 as the administrator. Since then I have taken a career change and gained a Level 3 in Early Years Childcare.

My current position is as Early Years Practitioner, Deputy Manager, Administrator and Deputy Child Protection Officer.

Previous experience has been in voluntary work in various children and youth groups. I have three children and five grandchildren who keep me on my toes as well as the rewarding work at First Steps.

As well as the Early Years qualification I also hold a current Paediatric and Workplace First Aid, a Level 4 in Business Based Computer Use, and a Level 3 for Teaching Adults in the Lifelong Learning Sector.

It is a pleasure to work with young minds and play a part in enabling children to gain knowledge and grown in understanding.

Pamela

My name is Pamela and I have worked with children from 4-16 years in different aspects for approximately 40 years.

I am a NVQ3 Teaching Assistant having been employed in two Plymouth schools, where I also had the pleasure of organising textile and sewing after school clubs.

I am now enjoying my work here as an Early Years Practitioner: encouraging, teaching and instilling confidence in our children in preparation for their next steps at school.

I love getting the children involved with singing rhymes, old and new, and being very "hands on" with arts and crafts.

First Steps has many children of different nationalities and I enjoy the challenge of finding out about their language and culture.

First Steps is a happy place to be: friendly, loving and educating.

Josie

My name is Josie and I am married with 2 grown up sons. I came from the Philippines 29 years ago and gained my British Citizenship. Britain is my home.

I joined First Steps as a volunteer and progressed to a member of the staff in 2007.

I have a NVQ 3 in Early Years Education. I thoroughly enjoy my work and being part of the team.

Denise

My name is Denise and I was born in Canada. I moved to England 20 years ago, my husband and I have 3 children.

I've been working with children from ages 2-11 years for over 20 years now and particularly enjoy teaching music, cookery and creative arts. I love glitter, glue and getting into a mess.

I have a NVQ 3 in Early Years Education and a Diploma in Children's Evangelism and Nurture.

I have been at First Steps since 2007 where I work part time and have had the privilege of seeing many children develop to their full potential in preparation for school.

I also work part time as the Under 5's Co-Ordinator within the Methodist Central Hall, which includes running 2 parent and toddler groups.
